Brave New World Bibliography

Roe, Benson B. "Why We Should Legalize Drugs." DRCNet Online Library of Drug Policy. Web. 29 Sept. 2010. druglibrary.org/schaffer/Misc/roe1.htm>.

This article gives many reasons why drugs should be legal. The main points of the article are the facts that drugs are not medically harmful to the body and tobacco is harmful, but no one wants to make tobacco illegal.  This article is most likely biased based on the website, but there are many valid statements made. This article relates to Brave New World because in that world they have their own drug like marijuana, called soma. In that world soma is completely legal. The people that have been around it all their lives have no problem with it, but the savage does not like soma.  The savage represents the people in our society that do not want drugs legalized, and the community represents the people in our society that want drugs legalized. This article shows that legalizing drugs is not necessarily a bad thing.

Oak, By Manali. "Pros and Cons of Cloning." Buzzle Web Portal: Intelligent Life on the Web. Web. 10 Oct. 2010. .

This article is explaining to common people the "pros and cons of cloning."  One major pro that was mentioned about cloning was that we could save people's lives with cloned organs. This would be really helpful because many people need organ transplants but never get them because there are not enough organs available. The cons mostly dealt with ethical issues. Cloning takes away diversity and lets humans act like god.  The article relates to Brave New World because in the book all humans are created by other humans.  God does not play a role in reproduction at all; everyone is made in test tubes.  The article shows that cloning could be a good thing in theory, but there are too many strong beliefs for it to work in our society, like it did in Brave New World.

PÉREZ-PEÑA, Richard, and Marc Santora. "Report on a New Form of H.I.V. Brings Alarm, Not   Surprise." The New York Times - Breaking News, World News & Multimedia. 13 Feb. 2005. Web. 10 Oct. 2010.

This article talks about H.I.V. that is cause by having too many sex partners. It tries to encourage monogamy because this disease is spreading quickly and people are not taking precautions to stop it. Many people that had lost family members to aids were interviewed to show the severity of the disease. This article is related to Brave New World because the people in that society are not monogamous at all.  Sex with multiple partners is encouraged in that society.  This article is trying to discourage polygamy because of the harmful consequences, but in Brave New World there are no harmful consequences so polygamy is not looked down on.

Cherry, Kendra. "What Is Behaviorism - An Introduction to Behaviorism." Psychology - Complete Guide to Psychology for Students, Educators & Enthusiasts. Web. 10 Oct. 2010. .

This article aims to answer the question "What is Behaviorism?" It states that there are two types of training used in Behaviorism: classical conditioning, and operant conditioning.  We saw behavioral conditioning in Brave New World when the kids got punished for touching the books and smelling the flowers. The kind of behavioral conditioning that punishes kids is operant conditioning. Classical conditioning was used in Brave New World to keep the people happy in their place in society.

"Hypnopaedia - Sleep Learning." Sleepdex - Resources for Better Sleep. Web. 11 Oct. 2010.  .

This article answers the question of whether or not sleep learning is effective.  The article states that hypnopaedia can be effective in getting people to remember rote facts, but does not really help people learn substantially.  In Brave New World hypnopaedia is used to make their society run smoother.  It is almost like it is used to brainwash the people of their society.  The same phrases are being repeated night after night, for many years in order to drill them into the people's brains.
